"If you're taking my father to the police station, I'm going too," Tasha said.
Detective Marchand opened her mouth to say something. Tasha was sure she was going to argue. Instead she said, "I think that's a good idea, Tasha. We have to ask you some questions, and it looks like no matter what happens, your father's not going to be released tonight. That means we'll need to arrange some place for you to stay."
"She can stay at my house," Jace said, stepping forward so suddenly he seemed to startle Detective Marchand. "I'll talk to my parents, Tasha, and catch up with you at the police station, okay?"
"Okay," Tasha said. She reached out and touched his hand. He held it for a moment, then, so quickly Tasha didn't have time to be surprised, he kissed her. While she watched him run back to his car, she fingered the still-warm place where his lips had brushed her skin.
