Scholastic Canada Reading Champions Program

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW.

ELIGIBILITY: "Scholastic Canada Reading Champions" (the "Program") is open to legal residents of Canada who are 13 years of age or older as of the date of entry, subject to the last sentence of this paragraph. Nominators who are below the age of majority must have the permission of their parent or legal guardian in order to enter the Program.  The parent or legal guardian of persons under the age of 13 may enter on behalf of such persons, and will be deemed the Nominator for the purposes of such entry and these Official Rules ("Parental Nominator"). Sponsor reserves the right to at any time request verification of the age of the Nominator or the existence of required parental consent, and, in the case of Parental Nominators, status as a parent or legal guardian, and should such information identify the Nominator as ineligible such Nominator will be disqualified from the Program. To become a Reading Champion, a nominee must be a legal resident of Canada 13 years of age or older. Reading Champions who are below the age of majority must have the permission of their parent or legal guardian in order to accept their award.

Employees, officers, and directors of Scholastic Canada, Ltd. ("Sponsor"), its affiliated and subsidiary companies, advertising and promotional agencies, and suppliers of promotional materials and services and any other entity engaged in any way in the development, production, printing, distribution, or execution of the Program (collectively, "Related Entities"), and members of the immediate family or household of such individuals are not eligible for nomination. ("Immediate family" means spouse and parents, siblings, and children and their spouses, whether or not residing with the ineligible individual.)

PROGRAM PERIOD: The entry period for the Program will start January 1, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. EST and end December 15, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. EST (the "Program Period").  Sponsor’s computer is the official timekeeping device for the Program. Nominations received after the end of the Program Period will not be eligible.

HOW TO ENTER:

PROGRAM ENTRIES: will be accepted throughout the Program Period. Nominations can be submitted online by completing and submitting the nomination form at www.scholastic.ca/readingchampions, via email (readingchampions@scholastic.ca) or by mail (Attn: Reading Champions Committee, Scholastic Canada Ltd., 175 Hillmount Rd., Markham, ON, L6C 1Z7). The supporting documentation should outline why your nominee should be chosen as a Reading Champion based on the selection criteria (see "How are the Reading Champions selected?" below). Supporting documentation can include a written submission, poster, poem, picture book, or other artifact. By entering, the Nominator (a) consents to Sponsor’s use of his/her name, likeness, image and/or voice (including photograph, film, and/or recording of the same), and province or territory of residence for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, for an unlimited period of time without further notice or consideration for the purpose of promoting this Program (including any outcome), (b) acknowledges and agrees that the Sponsor may, but is not obligated to, publish or post any or all entries, whether the nominee is selected as a Reading Champion or not, on its website(s) or any of its pages on any other site(s), including, but not limited to, social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and/or Instagram, and may be used for any other legal purpose, including, without limitation, advertising in any and all media, and (c) represents that the nomination is entirely your own work and you have all necessary permissions to include any and all third parties or third party material in your entry, including but not limited to the consent of parents/legal guardians of any minors appearing in any materials included with your entry.

PROGRAM READING CHAMPIONS WINNERS: Each month, on or about the 15th of the month, Sponsor will select up to 5 Reading Champions from the entries received over the course of the program.  Sponsor reserves the right to select fewer than 5 Reading Champions in the event there are less than 5 eligible entries that meet the criteria set forth below, as determined in Sponsor’s sole discretion.  Reading Champions will be selected based on the following equally weighted criteria:

For Individuals:

  • Shows leadership in promoting a love of reading in the community
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving the lives of children through reading
  • Plays a positive role in the lives of children and bringing the joy of reading to children

For Teachers/Librarians/Schools:

  • Creates a literacy-rich environment in the school/classroom
  • Displays a unique and exceptional effort in their commitment to bringing the joy of reading to children
  • Sparks a lifelong love of reading through leading by example

For Literacy Organizations/Non-Profits/Charities:

  • Helps put books into the hands of children who may not otherwise have access to books
  • Shows leadership in promoting a love of reading within communities
  • Communicates the importance and benefits of literacy

ENTRY RESTRICTIONS: Nominators must fully comply with the Official Rules. Any use of an automated entry device, robotic, repetitive, mechanically reproduced, automatic, programmed, or similar entry methods or agents (including, but not limited to, sweepstakes/contest-entry services) are prohibited and will void all  entries by that nominator.  By entering the Program, nominators accept and agree to these rules and the decisions of the Sponsor, which shall be final and binding.

PRIZES/APPROXIMATE RETAIL VALUE (ARV)

Prizes:  Each Reading Champion will receive a certificate of recognition and the opportunity to select a school, charity or non-profit organization (including the school or organization they are affiliated with), to which Scholastic Canada will make a book donation with a retail value of up to $1,000. Sponsor will consult with the selected school, charity or non-profit organization to customize the book donation to their needs.

READING CHAMPION WINNER NOTIFICATION: Sponsor will announce the Reading Champions on the Scholastic Reading Champions Program home page at www.scholastic.ca/readingchampions. Reading Champions will be notified via direct e-mail message or phone within one week of the selection date. Sponsor will have no liability relative to non-receipt of Reading Champion notification. Reading Champions must respond to the e-mail or phone call within seventy-two (72) hours with full name, mailing address, and (if notified by email) phone number; and if no response is received within 72 hours, Sponsor will include their entry in the following month’s nominations. The Reading Champions will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release ("Release") by the date specified. 

Except where prohibited, participation in the Program and acceptance of prize constitute the Reading Champions consent to Sponsor’s use of his/her name, likeness, image and/or voice (including photograph, film, and/or recording of the same), and province or territory of residence for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, for an unlimited period of time without further notice or consideration for the purpose of promoting this Program (including any outcome).

GENERAL CONDITIONS: Sponsor and its agencies are not responsible for incomplete information, incomplete transmission defaults, or faulty network connections, telephone, computer server/system/software failure of any kind, and/or delayed, garbled, or corrupted data. Any attempts by an individual to access the Program or website via a bot script or other brute-force attack will result in that IP address becoming ineligible. Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Program or website, to be acting in violation of the Official Rules or any laws, or to be attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Program by cheating, hacking, deception, misappropriation, infringement, or any other unfair practices/poor sportsmanship, or intending to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other nominators/persons. Sponsor and its agencies are not responsible for: (1) any incorrect, incomplete, or inaccurate information, whether caused by nominators, printing errors, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Program; (2) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to, malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software (beyond Sponsor’s control); (3) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Program; (4) technical or human error that may occur in the administration of the Program or the processing of entries for the Program; or (5) any injury or damage to property that may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, by nominator’s participation in the Program or receipt or use or misuse of any prize. All entries in the Program are subject to verification. Without limiting the foregoing, an entry in the Program will be automatically void if it is determined to be the product of an automated or mass-entry attempt (that is, not manually keystroked).

PROTECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION AND PUBLICITY RELEASE:  Sponsor and its authorized agents will collect, use, and disclose the personal information of the Nominator when they enter the Program for the purposes of administering the Program.  You may be offered the opportunity to receive additional communications from Sponsor or its partners about its products, and upcoming sweepstakes, contests and promotions. All information you provide to Sponsor will be used only for the purposes for which you have consented, and as described in its Privacy Policy, available at http://scholastic.ca/aboutscholastic/privacy.php.

By entering the Program and/or accepting a nomination, each Nominator and/or Reading Champion agrees to Sponsor's use of his/her name, city/province of residence, picture, biographical information, statements, voice and likeness in any advertising and publicity Sponsor and its respective successors, assigns and licensees may conduct relating to the Program in any media or format, whether now known or hereafter developed, including but not limited to the World Wide Web, at any time or times in perpetuity, without further compensation or notice, and hereby releases the Sponsor from any liability with respect thereto. LIABILITY LIMITATIONS: By entering the Program, each Nominator and Reading Champion agrees to release and hold harmless Sponsor, their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, related companies, advertising and promotion agencies, and all of their respective directors, officers, employees, representatives, agents, successors, and assigns from any and all injuries, liability, loss, or damage of any kind to person(s), including death, or property, arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from his/her receipt, acceptance, possession, use, and/or misuse of any prize or from his/her participation in this Program, or for any error in the announcement of any prize.

Sponsor’s failure to enforce any provision of these Official Rules shall NOT constitute a waiver of that provision.

All Program entries and Nominator information become the property of Sponsor, subject only to the policies of Sponsor’s privacy policy as posted on its website: http://scholastic.ca/aboutscholastic/privacy.php.  If, for any reason, a Nominator’s  entry in the Program is confirmed to have been erroneously deleted, lost, or otherwise destroyed or corrupted, such Nominator’s sole remedy is another opportunity to enter the Program (as applicable), provided that it is possible to do so (as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion).

If, for any reason, the Program is not capable of running as planned because, for example, of infection by computer virus, worms, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes that Sponsor, in its sole opinion, deems could corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Program as intended, Sponsor reserves the right to terminate, modify, or suspend this Program, in whole or in part. In such event, notice of such action will be posted at: www.scholastic.ca/readingchampions and Sponsor will conduct the Program and select Reading Champions in a manner determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion to be fair, appropriate, and consistent with these Official Rules.

CHOICE OF LAW:  The Program and any and all disputes arising in connection with the Program shall be governed by the laws of Canada.

READING CHAMPIONS WINNERS LIST: To obtain a list of Reading Champions, send a self-addressed stamped envelope after December 31, 2017 and no later than January 31, 2018, to Attn: Reading Champions Committee, Scholastic Canada Ltd., 175 Hillmount Rd., Markham, ON  L6C 1Z7, or go to scholastic.ca/readingchampions.
